Sheffield’s Plasterboard Painting Experts
Over ten years working across Sheffield’s housing stock means we understand what post-war and extended properties need. Gleadless properties often have rooms modified in the 1970s and 1980s using plasterboard that was never properly taped and jointed at the seams.
Freshly Plastered Walls
Freshly plastered walls must dry fully before any paint goes on. A skim plaster surface typically needs four to six weeks to dry completely in a well-ventilated room. Painting too early traps moisture and causes adhesion failure later.
Once dry, fresh plaster is highly absorbent. A standard emulsion applied directly will be drawn into the surface unevenly, producing a patchy finish that cannot be fixed with additional coats. A sealing coat is required first.
The colour of fresh plaster changes as it dries. We assess the surface during the quote visit and advise on timing. Rushing this stage is the single most common cause of problems in new plaster painting.
Sealing Coat Application
A sealing coat is a diluted first coat applied to bare or newly plastered walls. It seals the surface, reduces suction, and provides an even base for the finish coats. Without a sealing coat on fresh plaster, finish coats will absorb unevenly and the result will be patchy.
A sealing coat is applied at a 20 to 30 percent dilution with clean water. One coat is usually sufficient on a well-dried skim. Two coats may be needed on a very absorbent surface or where the plaster has dried unevenly.
After the sealing coat has dried, the wall is ready for two full finish coats of emulsion. The sealing coat is the critical difference between a good finish and a patchy one.
First and Second Fix
In new build and extension rooms, plasterboard is often installed in two phases: first fix before services are run, and second fix after electrical and plumbing work is complete. Painting is typically done in two phases to match.
Between first and second fix, walls may be primed but not fully finished. Second fix painting involves touching up around new sockets, light fittings, and any damage caused by the services installation. We manage this sequence correctly and advise builders and clients on the right timing.
In Gleadless and Crookes properties where a rear extension has been added, the transition between old plaster walls and new plasterboard is a common challenge. Getting a consistent finish across both surfaces requires different preparation on each side of the junction.

New Build, Extension and Plaster Repair

New Build and Extension
New build rooms and extension rooms have plasterboard that is skim-coated and ready to paint. The sealing coat sequence applies to all of these. The main additional challenge is often the junction between the new room and the existing house, where different surfaces meet.
Rear extensions in Broomhill and Hillsborough properties frequently have a change of wall construction at the extension threshold. Each side is primed and prepared appropriately before a consistent finish coat is applied across the full room.
Plaster Repair and Preparation
Plasterboard walls that have been modified, patched, or damaged need localised repair before any overall painting can begin. Poorly taped seams, impact damage, and areas where old fixtures have been removed all create surface imperfections that will show through paint.
All imperfections are filled, taped, and sanded before priming. In Gleadless post-war properties where seams were never properly taped originally, scrim tape and jointing compound are applied over the full length of the seam before any finish coat.
How We Approach Plasterboard Painting
1. Free Quote
We assess the plasterboard, check the dryness of any new plaster, and provide a fixed price.
2. Seam Preparation
Scrim tape and jointing compound are applied at all bare seams and any surface damage.
3. Sealing Coat
A diluted first coat seals the surface and equalises absorption across the board.
4. Priming
Any patched or highly absorbent areas receive additional primer before finish coats.
5. Finish Coats
Two full coats of emulsion are applied for a complete, even finish.

Plasterboard Painting Costs in Sheffield
Prices below are estimates only. Every room is different. Call 0114 697 7077 for a precise quote. A plasterboard room in Sheffield typically ranges from £350 to £750, depending on room size, seam condition, and whether plaster repair is needed.

Post-War Semi (Gleadless)
Properties in Gleadless with 1970s plasterboard modifications — where original seams were never properly taped — need scrim and jointing work before any painting. This adds time but is essential for a lasting finish.
Typical range: £350 to £600, including tape-and-fill and sealing coat.
Extension Room (Broomhill/Greystones)
New plasterboard on one wall of an Edwardian semi, with the sealing coat sequence applied to the new surface only. The existing plaster side is prepared separately for a consistent finish across the junction.
Typical range: £300 to £500, sealing coat and two finish coats.
Full New Build or Extension Room (Ranmoor/Fulwood)
Larger rooms with all new plasterboard throughout require the full sealing coat sequence on every wall. Room size is the main cost driver at this level.
Typical range: £500 to £750, full sealing coat sequence and two finish coats.
