Sheffield’s Ceiling Painting Specialists
Over ten years working on Sheffield’s Victorian and Edwardian housing means we know what period ceilings need.
Smooth Ceiling Painting
A properly painted ceiling makes a room feel larger and cleaner. Two full coats of ceiling paint are always required for complete, even coverage. A single coat over a coloured or stained ceiling will show through, especially in good natural light.
A deep pile roller is used for flat ceilings to achieve a consistent, stipple-free finish. Cutting in at the ceiling-wall junction is done by brush before rolling. A clean, straight line at this junction is one of the most visible marks of quality work.
In period properties across Nether Edge, Greystones, and Ecclesall, ceiling heights of nine or ten feet require a sturdy working platform. A scaffolding tower or a tall platform ladder is used depending on the room size.
Artex Removal and Overskimming
Artex textured ceilings are common in Sheffield properties modified in the 1970s and 1980s. Many clients want a smooth flat ceiling but do not know how to achieve it. The options are removal or overskimming with a skim coat of plaster, and both are achievable.
Older Artex may contain asbestos fibres if applied before 1985. We always check the age of the property and the likely installation date before recommending removal. If there is any doubt, we advise a sample test before any work begins.
Overskimming is the cleaner approach where asbestos is a concern. A plasterer applies a thin skim coat over the textured surface. Once dry and sanded, this provides a flat base for painting.
Cornicing and Roses
Original plaster cornicing and ceiling roses are period features that significantly affect the character of a room. They must be cut in by hand with a brush, never rolled up to the edge. Paint on the face of a cornice profile is very visible and very difficult to correct.
In Nether Edge Victorian terraces, the cornice profile is often deep and detailed. Cutting in around it properly takes longer than on a plain ceiling junction. This is time we build into every quote for a period property.
Ceiling roses in Ranmoor and Fulwood detached properties can be large and elaborately moulded. We take extra care to preserve the depth and definition of the moulding. Overloading these with paint builds up in the recesses and loses the profile detail.

Water Stains and High Ceilings

Water Damage and Staining
Water stains on ceilings are caused by leaks from above, condensation, or damp penetration. Painting over a stain without treating it first always fails. The stain bleeds through even multiple coats of ordinary ceiling paint.
An oil-based or shellac-based stain blocker is applied before the finish coat on any stained ceiling. This seals the stain and prevents bleed-through. The finish coat then goes on cleanly and evenly.
It is important that any active leak is resolved before painting. We will always ask about this during the quote visit. Painting over an active leak is a waste of time and money.
High Ceilings
High ceilings in Victorian and Edwardian properties in Ranmoor, Fulwood, and Nether Edge present a safe access challenge. We always use appropriate equipment for the ceiling height. This means a scaffolding tower for ceilings above ten feet, not improvised stacking of furniture.
Working at height safely also requires the right lighting. We bring additional lighting where needed to see the ceiling surface clearly. Missed areas and uneven coverage are difficult to spot without good light at ceiling level.

Ceiling Painting Costs in Sheffield
Prices below are estimates only. Every ceiling is different. Call 0114 697 7077 for a precise quote.
What Drives the Price
A reception room ceiling in a Sheffield property typically ranges from £250 to £700, depending on size, height, and the amount of original plasterwork.
Three factors drive the cost: ceiling height (high ceilings in Ranmoor and Fulwood require a tower and take longer), original plasterwork (cornicing and ceiling roses in Nether Edge and Greystones require careful hand cutting-in), and stain treatment (ceilings with water stains need a specialist stain blocker applied before the finish coat).
Victorian Terrace Ceiling
A reception room ceiling in a Victorian terrace in Nether Edge, with original coving, typically costs £250 to £450. This includes stain treatment if required and two finish coats.
Edwardian Semi and Large Detached
An Edwardian semi main bedroom ceiling in Greystones or Ecclesall, with coving and ceiling rose, typically costs £200 to £400 for two finish coats.
A large Victorian or Edwardian detached reception room in Ranmoor or Fulwood, with high ceiling and elaborate cornicing, typically costs £450 to £700. Scaffolding tower access is included in the price.
