Interior Walls

Interior wall painting is the foundation of any room repaint. Getting it right means correct preparation, the right number of coats, and maintaining a wet edge across each wall for an even, mark-free finish.

We assess every wall surface before painting. New or bare plaster requires a sealing coat before any finish coats go on. Previously painted walls may need a primer where there are repairs or surface changes.

In Nether Edge and Ecclesall properties, the original plaster walls have been painted many times over the decades. In Banner Cross and Crookes properties where wallpaper has been skimmed over, we always check the bond before starting.

Feature Walls

A feature wall in a single bold colour transforms a room without committing the whole space to a strong tone. We advise on both wall choice and colour when we visit.

Period Sheffield properties have natural focal points for feature treatment. Chimney breasts in Nether Edge and Greystones properties, alcove walls in Ecclesall dining rooms, and the wall behind a bed in Ranmoor master bedrooms are all strong candidates.

Cutting in cleanly at the boundary of a feature wall is one of the most technically demanding elements of interior painting. Fine-edge masking tape is used, pressed down fully along its length, and removed while the paint is still slightly tacky for the sharpest possible edge.

Plasterboard and New Plaster

Plasterboard and freshly skimmed walls need a sealing coat before any finish coats go on. The sealing coat reduces the high suction of a new surface and gives the finish coats an even base.

In Gleadless post-war properties, plasterboard rooms modified in the 1970s and 1980s often have bare seams where the original scrim tape has failed. These seams must be taped with scrim and filled with jointing compound before any painting begins.

Textured Walls and Exterior Masonry

Textured and Artex Walls

Textured and Artex walls are common in Sheffield properties modified in the 1970s and 1980s. Painting over Artex without addressing the texture is possible, but the result retains the original pattern.

We can paint over textured walls if the client wants to keep the texture and simply refresh the colour. Where the client wants a flat finish, we advise on the plastering work required before painting can begin.

Older Artex may contain asbestos if applied before 1985. We advise a sample test before any removal or sanding work begins on surfaces of that age. This is a straightforward precaution, not an obstacle.

Exterior Walls

Exterior wall painting in Sheffield requires a breathable masonry system that handles the significant westerly rainfall the city receives. Breathable masonry paints are used on all exterior surfaces.

South and west-facing walls in Fulwood and Ranmoor properties are exposed to the full force of Pennine weather. These surfaces need thorough inspection for cracks, pointing gaps, and any failed previous paint before a new coat goes on.

Surface Condition

Walls in Banner Cross properties where wallpaper has been skimmed over may require re-skimming before painting, which adds significant time to the job.

A single room wall repaint in Sheffield typically ranges from £300 to £900, depending on room size, surface condition, and whether preparation work is needed.

Room Size and Ceiling Height

Large rooms in Ranmoor and Fulwood detached properties cost more than standard rooms in Hillsborough or Gleadless semis.

A standard room repaint in a Hillsborough or Crookes Victorian terrace, single colour, runs from £250 to £450 for walls only with two coats.

Feature Treatments

A feature wall or a multi-colour scheme with a colour boundary takes more time to mask and execute than a single-colour room.

A large room with feature wall in Ranmoor or Fulwood, including feature wall masking and two colours throughout, typically runs from £600 to £900.
