Staircase Painters in Sheffield

Turned timber balusters are one of the defining features of a Victorian or Edwardian staircase. Each one must be painted individually, working into the turnings with a brush to get full coverage without building up runs in the grooves.

In Nether Edge and Ecclesall properties, the baluster count on a standard flight of stairs typically ranges from twelve to twenty or more. We assess the existing paint on each baluster before starting and flag any stripping or sanding needed in the quote.

The handrail is the most-handled surface on the staircase. It needs a durable, hard-wearing finish — eggshell or hard gloss. Standard emulsion will mark and wear within weeks on a surface with daily contact.

The newel post at the foot of the staircase is often the most decoratively detailed element. Victorian newel posts in Greystones and Ranmoor properties can have carved or turned details that require careful brushwork. In older properties, switching from a stained to a painted finish requires a full chemical strip before any primer will adhere.

Stair treads take the most physical punishment of any painted surface in the house. A hard-wearing floor-grade or stair enamel is used for treads, and a matching finish for the risers.

Period properties in Nether Edge and Ecclesall often have original timber stair treads that have been stripped bare or had carpet removed. Bare timber treads need sanding, a primer, and a minimum of two coats. The underside of the staircase structure itself can be painted as a ceiling surface in the hallway ceiling colour, or picked out as a feature in the wall colour. We advise on this approach based on the specific layout.

Victorian and Edwardian staircases in Sheffield’s period properties are significant architectural elements. An open-string staircase with turned balusters, a shaped newel post, and a moulded handrail is a feature that adds character and value to the house. Maintaining and repainting it correctly preserves that value.
