Sheffield Staircase Painting Services
Over ten years working on Sheffield’s period properties means we know what these staircases require.
Balusters and Spindles
Turned timber balusters are one of the defining features of a Victorian or Edwardian staircase. Each one must be painted individually, working into the turnings with a brush to get full coverage without building up runs in the grooves.
In Nether Edge and Ecclesall properties, the baluster count on a standard flight of stairs typically ranges from twelve to twenty or more. We assess the existing paint on each baluster before starting and flag any stripping or sanding needed in the quote.
Handrail and Newel Post
The handrail is the most-handled surface on the staircase. It needs a durable, hard-wearing finish — eggshell or hard gloss. Standard emulsion will mark and wear within weeks on a surface with daily contact.
The newel post at the foot of the staircase is often the most decoratively detailed element. Victorian newel posts in Greystones and Ranmoor properties can have carved or turned details that require careful brushwork. In older properties, switching from a stained to a painted finish requires a full chemical strip before any primer will adhere.
Stair Risers and Treads
Stair treads take the most physical punishment of any painted surface in the house. A hard-wearing floor-grade or stair enamel is used for treads, and a matching finish for the risers.
Period properties in Nether Edge and Ecclesall often have original timber stair treads that have been stripped bare or had carpet removed. Bare timber treads need sanding, a primer, and a minimum of two coats. In some Hillsborough and Crookes terraces, treads have been replaced with modern timber — a painted finish across all elements unifies the staircase.
Understairs Area
The understairs cupboard or open area beneath the staircase is a surface often left unfinished or painted poorly in previous decorating rounds. We include this area in a full staircase repaint and apply the same finish standard throughout.
The underside of the staircase structure itself can be painted as a ceiling surface in the hallway ceiling colour, or picked out as a feature in the wall colour. We advise on this approach based on the specific layout.
Victorian and Edwardian Staircases
Victorian and Edwardian staircases in Sheffield’s period properties are significant architectural elements. An open-string staircase with turned balusters, a shaped newel post, and a moulded handrail is a feature that adds character and value to the house. Maintaining and repainting it correctly preserves that value.
In Ranmoor and Fulwood properties, some clients prefer to expose the original timber in a natural stain rather than paint. This is a different process and we advise on the suitability of the existing timber condition before recommending it.

Staircase Painting Costs in Sheffield
A full staircase repaint in Sheffield typically ranges from £400 to £1,200. Every staircase is different — call 0114 697 7077 for a precise quote.

Number of Balusters
More spindles means more individual painting time. Victorian terraces in Nether Edge with twenty or more balusters take longer than a simpler 1930s semi with plain square balusters.
Typical range: Victorian terrace staircase (Nether Edge/Hillsborough, open-string with turned balusters) runs from £500 to £850 for a full repaint including individual baluster painting, newel, handrail, and string.
Condition of the Woodwork
Staircases with accumulated paint layers or damaged string boards need more preparation before painting can begin. We factor all preparation into the fixed price at the quote stage — no surprises.
An Edwardian semi staircase in Greystones or Ecclesall with standard profile balusters typically runs from £400 to £650 for a full repaint with two coats on all woodwork.
Tread and Riser Treatment
Including hard-wearing floor-grade paint on treads adds to the cost but is essential for durability. Standard emulsion on treads will fail within months under daily foot traffic.
A large Victorian or Edwardian detached staircase in Ranmoor or Fulwood, with a wide flight and ornate newel, typically ranges from £800 to £1,200 for a full repaint including all carved detail.
