Timber Garage Doors
Timber garage doors need thorough preparation before any new paint is applied. We strip back to sound material, sand, and fill any splits or cracks with exterior filler.
Bare timber is primed with an oil-based or specialist timber primer before any finish coat. We apply durable exterior gloss or satin in the colour of your choice.

Metal and Steel Doors
Metal and steel garage doors corrode when preparation was not done properly the first time. Bubbling and rust bleed-through are both signs of a job where rust was painted over rather than treated.
We wire-brush surface rust, apply a rust converter, and prime with a rust-inhibiting metal primer before any finish coat. More advanced corrosion is assessed at the quotation stage.

GRP, uPVC, and Combined Exterior Work
Composite and plastic doors require specialist primer systems. We also paint garage doors as part of a wider exterior repaint.
GRP and Composite Doors
GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is the most common composite door material on newer properties. It has a smooth, non-porous surface that standard primers cannot bond to.
A specialist adhesion primer must be applied before any topcoat — without it, the finish will peel. The door does not need stripping, just cleaning, degreasing, and correct priming before the colour coat goes on.
uPVC Doors
uPVC garage doors can be painted with the right system. A specialist plastic primer bonds to the uPVC surface and creates the foundation for the finish coat.
Standard paint applied directly to uPVC without this primer will peel within a season. With the correct primer in place, a painted uPVC door holds its finish for five to eight years. Colour choices range from standard white through to contemporary dark greys and black.
Combining with an Exterior Repaint
Garage doors are often painted as part of a wider exterior repaint. Including them in the same scope means one visit and a consistent colour and finish across the full front or rear elevation.

How We Paint Your Garage Door
1. Assessment
We check the door material, existing coating condition, and note any rust, rot, peeling, or adhesion failure before quoting.
2. Surface Preparation
Timber is sanded back to sound wood. Metal is wire-brushed and any rust treated. GRP and uPVC surfaces are cleaned and degreased. No new product goes on over a compromised surface.
3. Priming
Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting metal primer. GRP and uPVC get specialist adhesion primers designed for non-porous surfaces.
4. Finish Coats
Two finish coats are standard. Exterior gloss or satin for timber and metal. Specialist flexible topcoats for GRP and uPVC where required. Colour matching is available on request.
5. Final Check
We check coverage on all faces — including edges and the inside face if accessible — before leaving. Any touch-ups are completed on the day.
