Masonry Painting Services in Sheffield

Rendered Walls

Rendered walls on Edwardian semis in Greystones, Banner Cross, and Broomhill need checking carefully before any painting begins. Hairline cracks in sand and cement render allow moisture to get behind the surface.

The full rendered surface is inspected before quoting. Cracks above two to three millimetres are filled with a flexible exterior filler before any primer goes on. Render with significant delamination needs specialist repair before painting, and we advise on this at the quote stage.

Paint for rendered walls must be breathable enough to allow residual moisture to leave the render as conditions dry. A fully waterproof non-breathable coating traps moisture and causes the paint film to blister and peel, often within a single winter.

Exposed Brick

Exposed brick properties in Hillsborough, Chapeltown, and parts of Crookes can be painted if the brickwork is structurally sound and the mortar joints are in reasonable condition. Brick requires a masonry primer before the finish coat.

Brickwork that has been painted before can be difficult to strip completely. Where the existing paint is failing, we feather back loose sections and use a stabilising solution on any loose or crumbling areas before a new paint system goes on.

Colour choice matters more on brick than on smooth render. We advise at the quote stage on colours that work with the natural tone of the brick rather than fighting it.

Stone Facades

Sandstone and gritstone are the dominant exterior materials in the south and west Sheffield suburbs. Nether Edge, Ecclesall, Ranmoor, and Fulwood properties built between 1870 and 1930 are almost all sandstone or gritstone construction.

Non-breathable masonry paint on sandstone traps moisture vapour behind the paint film. The vapour pressure builds up and causes the paint to blister, typically within two to three seasons on exposed west-facing elevations. Only breathable masonry coatings are used on all sandstone and gritstone facades without exception.

Breathable Coatings and Surface Treatment

Breathable Coatings

Breathable masonry paint allows water vapour to pass through the paint film while resisting liquid water penetration. This is the defining characteristic required for sandstone, gritstone, and most render in the Sheffield climate.

Quality breathable masonry coatings are used, matched to porous stone surfaces. The application rate matters as much as the product — too thin a coat reduces durability, too thick a coat reduces breathability. Paint is applied at the manufacturer’s recommended rate for the surface type.

For a full exterior repaint that includes masonry, timber, and fascias, see our exterior painting service. For timber fences and boundary structures, see our fence painting page.

Biological Growth Treatment

Biological growth on masonry — including algae, moss, lichen, and black mould — must be treated before any preparation or painting begins. This is a non-negotiable preparation stage on any north-facing or heavily shaded elevation.

Skipping the treatment stage and painting over active growth produces a result that fails quickly. Growth continues under the new paint film and the new coat lifts within months. All biological growth is treated as standard on any masonry job where it is present.

How Our Masonry Painting Works

1. Quote Visit

Your decorator inspects the full masonry surface, checks mortar joints, identifies any biological growth, and confirms the scope in writing.

2. Treatment

Algae, moss, and other biological growth is treated with a mould treatment wash and rinsed thoroughly before preparation begins.

3. Preparation

Cracks are filled. Loose or crumbling surface material is stabilised. Failed paint is feathered back or removed.

4. Priming

Bare stone, brick, or render receives the correct masonry primer before finish coats are applied.

5. Painting

Breathable finish coats are applied at the correct rate, with adequate drying time between coats.

Masonry Painting Costs in Sheffield

Masonry painting in Sheffield typically ranges from around £400 for a single gable wall to over £4,000 for a large detached with full preparation. Prices below are estimates only — call 0114 697 7077 for a precise quote.

Surface Area and Access

A gable wall on a semi-detached in Ecclesall has significant surface area. A large detached in Ranmoor with four exposed elevations and bay windows requires scaffold and extensive access equipment. Access method is confirmed and included in the fixed price.

Condition of the Masonry

Stone facades with heavy biological growth or failed paint from a previous non-breathable coat require more preparation. This takes time but cannot be skipped if the new coat is to last.

Masonry System Used

Some highly exposed properties in Fulwood and Ranmoor benefit from a specialist textured masonry paint for additional durability. This product has a higher material cost than standard breathable masonry paint.

Typical ranges: single gable wall treatment £400–£800; Edwardian semi full exterior masonry £900–£1,600; large Victorian or Edwardian detached £2,500–£5,000+.
