Decking Boards
Decking boards take the hardest punishment of any exterior timber surface. Foot traffic, standing water, UV exposure, and frost damage all degrade the surface and the coating above it.
Boards with significant rot, deep splits, or raised grain need attention before any coating goes on. Light sanding and cleaning is included in the preparation stage for all standard deck repaints.
On elevated Fulwood properties, boards on shaded north-facing sections often require mould treatment before preparation begins. We allow proper drying time after treatment before applying any coating.
Balustrades
Balustrade rails, posts, and infill panels require separate preparation from the boards beneath them. The joints between posts and boards collect moisture and need sealing properly.
Balustrade coatings are matched to the main deck finish for a consistent result. Where balustrades have been painted previously and the paint is peeling, they are stripped or sanded back to a sound surface before priming.
Steps and Handrails
Steps and handrails need particular care on raised decks. Steps are high-wear surfaces and benefit from anti-slip finishes where the tread is exposed to rain.
Handrails must be coated thoroughly on all faces, including the underside, to prevent moisture ingress at end grain. Period properties in Dore and Ranmoor sometimes have original hardwood handrails that can be oiled rather than painted.
Deck Staining
Penetrating deck stains feed the timber rather than coating the surface. On sound, uncoated decking, a quality penetrating oil or stain is often a better choice than paint — it will not peel or flake, and reapplication is simpler.
Where decking has previously been painted, switching to a penetrating stain is not straightforward. The old coating must be stripped fully first, and we advise at the quote stage on whether stripping is practical.
Anti-Slip Finishes
Decks in frequent use, particularly those in shade or with persistent damp, benefit from an anti-slip additive in the top coat. This is a practical choice on any deck that families use regularly.

How Our Deck Painting Works
1. Quote Visit
Your decorator assesses deck condition, checks for rot and algae, and confirms the full scope in writing.
2. Cleaning and Treatment
Algae, moss, and surface contamination are treated and rinsed before any preparation begins.
3. Preparation
Boards are sanded or scraped as required. Any split or raised sections are noted and addressed.
4. Priming
Bare or stripped timber receives a primer coat before the main paint system goes on.
5. Coating
Top coats are applied with adequate drying time between each. Anti-slip additive is mixed in at this stage where specified.
Deck Painting Costs in Sheffield
Prices below are estimates only. Every project is different. Call 0114 697 7077 for a precise quote.

Deck Size and Layout
A compact urban deck behind a Crookes terrace is a short job. A large elevated platform at a Fulwood detached, with multiple levels and full balustrades, takes considerably longer.
Deck painting in Sheffield typically ranges from £200 for a small ground-level deck up to £600 or more for a large elevated platform with balustrades and steps.
Existing Condition
Boards with heavy algae growth or a build-up of old failed paint require more preparation. This adds time and is reflected in the price.
- Small ground-level deck (Crookes or Hillsborough): £200 to £350, boards and steps
- Medium elevated deck (Greystones or Banner Cross): £300 to £500, boards, steps, and balustrade
- Large elevated deck with balustrades (Fulwood or Dore): £400 to £700, full scope including mould treatment
Coating Type
Penetrating oils and standard deck stains are less labour-intensive than full paint systems. Anti-slip top coats add a small amount to the coating cost.
For broader exterior painting work on house walls and fencing at the same time, we can provide a combined quote.
